a bowl of six Sri Lankan curries with rice, poppadoms and a fried egg - vegetarian food travel

Plan your trip around good vegetarian food!

Food is the reason we travel. There is nothing better than arriving into a new country, dumping your bags at your hotel, and setting off in search of some tasty local food. And if itโ€™s something weโ€™ve never tried or heard of, well, thatโ€™s even better!

We know it gets much more difficult if youโ€™re navigating a new country, new cuisine, new language, while trying to find vegetarian food. Weโ€™ve been there, weโ€™ve got all the t-shirts, and weโ€™ve definitely made mistakes.

All of that info is right here for you. These veg food guides will help you navigate your next adventure like a pro, and make sure that the food isnโ€™t just an afterthought, but an integral part of your trip!

Turkish Cuisine

Turkish coffee is some of the best in the world, and the breakfast scene is stunning!

Yes, Turkish cuisine is heavy on the meat, but there are many veg-friendly dishes too; we had no problem eating vegetarian during our six weeks here. It definitely gets more challenging the further east you travel, but that’s where the good pistachios are!

Central Asian Cuisines

Notoriously meat-heavy, Central Asian cuisine likely won’t be at the top of any vegetarian’s ‘must-try’ list. But, we spent over three months in the region and actually managed to find some good tasty veg food. The major cities have plenty of restaurants and veg versions of the meaty classics, but prepare yourself for a lot of pumpkin!

South Asian Cuisines

South Asia is THE place for vegetarians! And not only is it veg-friendly, it’s some of the world’s very tastiest food; hands down. Karnataka’s masala dosa, Goa’s cafreal, Sri Lanka’s egg hoppers. Get yourself there ASAP and eat everythinggg!

Taiwanese Cuisine

Taiwan’s amazing vegetarian food scene is just not talked about enough! There are some odd sneaky meaty elements that might creep into a seemingly vegetarian dish and the language barrier can make this even tougher. But with a little effort you can find some delicious veg options. Stinky tofu is a MUST!

Balkan Cuisines

The Balkans really is a challenge for us vegetarians. Albania does have lots of cheese and Mediterranean veg, while Bosnia & Herzegovina is in our top three most difficult countries to be a vegetarian!
